DTV Visa New Rules 2026: What Changed on 31 August?

Two supporting documents changed for every DTV application: proof of permanent residence and a criminal record clearance certificate.

By Make Living Easy ·

Thailand introduced new supporting document requirements for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), effective 31 August 2026.

The changes affect both DTV Workcation applicants, including digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers, and DTV Thai Soft Power applicants, including those enrolling in Thai cooking and Muay Thai programmes.

Two requirements are particularly important: proof of permanent residence and a criminal record clearance certificate.

What changed on 31 August 2026?

According to an announcement by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, published on 28 August 2026 and republished by the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow (opens in a new tab), the following changes took effect on 31 August 2026.

These changes apply to both Workcation and Thai Soft Power applications. Applicants must still meet the existing financial, identification and category-specific requirements.

1. Proof of permanent residence

Previously, applicants were required to provide a document indicating their current location. Under the revised requirements, applicants must instead provide proof of permanent residence.

This change is especially important for applicants planning to travel to another country to submit their DTV application.

Some Thai embassies and consulates explicitly require applicants to be nationals or permanent residents of the country where they submit their application — for example, the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane (opens in a new tab). The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Osaka (opens in a new tab) asks for proof of permanent residence in the country or territory where the application is submitted.

A temporary visit or hotel booking should therefore not be assumed to satisfy the new residence requirement.

The precise documentation accepted depends on the Thai embassy or consulate processing the application. Applicants should verify their eligibility with the relevant mission before making travel arrangements.

2. Criminal record clearance certificate

A criminal record clearance certificate is now an additional supporting document for DTV applications. The issuing authority and document requirements may vary by embassy or consulate.

For example, some Thai missions, such as the Consulate-General in Osaka (opens in a new tab), specify that the certificate must come from the applicant's country of nationality or permanent residence. Others specify how recently the certificate must have been issued: the Royal Thai Embassy in London (opens in a new tab) requires a certificate issued within six months of submission, and the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles (opens in a new tab) an FBI certificate issued within three months.

Applicants should confirm which country's certificate is acceptable, its validity period, and whether translation or legalisation is necessary.

Because obtaining a criminal record certificate can take time, applicants should prepare it before submitting their application.

3. Do the changes apply to both DTV Workcation and Thai Soft Power?

Yes. The updated supporting document requirements apply to both DTV categories.

DTV Workcation

This route covers eligible digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers and other qualifying professionals.

Applicants must provide the newly required residence and criminal record documents, alongside the supporting evidence applicable to their work activities. See our DTV Workation route page for the full requirements.

DTV Thai Soft Power

This route covers qualifying activities such as Thai cooking courses, Muay Thai training and certain medical treatments.

Applicants must also provide proof of permanent residence and a criminal record clearance certificate, in addition to supporting documents for their chosen activity. See our DTV Thai Soft Power route page for programme options.

Enrolling in a Thai cooking or Muay Thai programme does not exempt an applicant from the updated requirements.

What should applicants do now?

Before applying for a DTV, applicants should check the requirements of the specific Thai embassy or consulate handling their application.

In particular, confirm that you are eligible to apply through that mission, that your residence documents are acceptable, and that your criminal record clearance certificate meets its requirements. Requirements may differ between Thai diplomatic missions.
