Thailand's Long-Stay Visas Compared: Which One Fits Your Budget and Lifestyle

A comparison of the Destination Thailand Visa and the Long-Term Resident visa, and where each fits.

By Make Living Easy ·

Individuals planning a long-term stay in Thailand typically choose among a small number of visa routes, each suited to different circumstances. The following comparison outlines the key distinctions.

The Destination Thailand Visa represents the lowest-commitment option. It requires 500,000 THB (approximately USD 15,000), held in a personal savings or current account for at least three consecutive months prior to application; cryptocurrency holdings and investment-account statements are not accepted as proof of funds. Combined with either remote employment or enrolment in an approved cultural programme, such as a Thai cooking course or Muay Thai training, this provides five years of multiple-entry access with stays of up to 180 days.

The LTR visa is designed for a different profile of applicant. Its four categories — Wealthy Global Citizen, Wealthy Pensioner, Work-from-Thailand Professional and Highly-Skilled Professional — each carry a distinct income or asset threshold, but share a common structure: a ten-year visa, annual rather than 90-day reporting, and, in most cases, an exemption from Thai tax on foreign income remitted in the year following the year it was earned.

The appropriate choice depends on the source of an applicant's income, the intended length of stay, and the relevance of tax treatment on foreign income. A consultation is generally sufficient to determine the most suitable route.
